College tutorials serve several important functions:
• they enrich and enhance what is offered in university tutorials;
• they provide small group settings where you can ask questions
and practise unfamiliar skills;
• they’re an easy way to build up friendly support networks
with other students.
The College offers a comprehensive Academic Program, managed by the Dean of Studies, which is comprised of small group tutorials, individual consultations, workshops, seminars and other related activities. Resident and non-resident tutors provide tutorials in a wide range of subjects and members of the Senior Common Room (SCR) and senior students are on hand to offer more informal support and guidance. The College Librarian and Assistant Librarian also encourage students to approach them for academic advice.
College tutorials are an adjunct to University classes. A college tutorial will normally be arranged in Ormond if a cohort of four or more students is enrolled in a particular subject. In cases where Ormond is not offering a particular tutorial, a student may be able to attend a tutorial at a neighbouring college. If this is not an option, the Dean of Studies will usually arrange some individual support if the student requests this. In addition to regular tutorials, students may be offered individual consultations with tutors and further support may be provided by senior students in the later stages of their degrees who are willing to act as mentors to more junior students. Tutorials are ordinarily conducted once a week during the University teaching term. Students are expected to attend tutorials if they are provided in their subjects. They are required to offer their tutor an apology for absence, in advance whenever possible, if they are unable to attend a particular tutorial.
Faculties supported by the tutorial program normally include: Architecture,
Arts, Economics and Commerce, Engineering, Land and Food Resources,
Law, Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, Music, Science and Veterinary
Science.
