Address by Dr Rufus Black at the Service for the Commemoration of Founders
and Benefactors on 30 August 2009.
The annual Service for the Commemoration of Founders & Benefactors celebrates the Ormond tradition of giving to sustain
each generation of Ormondians: past, present and future.
Donors, recipients, staff and students gathered in the College Chapel where the Master Dr Rufus Black began his address
with these words:
'Tonight I want to make what might seem to be a surprising connection between a man who began life as a stable hand in the
colony of Victoria and today's President of the United States - a link between Francis Ormond and Barak Obama. What connects them is a vision
of citizenship as a task that is indissolubly ethical and intellectual...'.
