Bedrooms in Ormond (known as ‘hermits’) vary in style and size throughout the four residential buildings. First year students usually live in Picken Court, McCaughey Court or O-Wing, while more senior students live for the most part in Main Building. Students are allocated their bedroom in the first year, but in later years they are able to indicate a preference for a particular room, or rooms. A seniority system, based upon year level at University and years in residence, guides the room allocation system.
Residents can decorate their rooms as they wish, within sensible guidelines. Thus the bedrooms, which are used for conference guests over the summer break, are transformed within days of the start of the academic year into the personal spaces or ‘homes’ for over 300 Ormond residents, and as such, express each person’s individuality.
