Academic Visitors
At Ormond College there is a well-established tradition of welcoming academic
visitors from interstate and overseas. Whilst in Ormond, visitors are
offered associate membership of the Senior Common Room (SCR) and during
their time in the College it is hoped that they will participate in
SCR and College functions. Each Monday night during University teaching
terms, visitors are invited to pre-dinner drinks in the Senior Common
Room, prior to dining on High Table in the College’s renowned
Hall. Occasions such as these provide visitors with opportunities to
meet resident members of the College and other visitors in residence.
Ormond is a diverse and lively academic community that we hope adds
a further dimension to the University of Melbourne experience of our
visitors. Whether it be an informal lunch time conversation with other
residents, attendance at a faculty dinner or participation in the
SCR seminar program, we invite visitors to dip into at least some
of the opportunities for engagement with the community that are made
available to them..
Accommodation
Academic visitors are accommodated on the College site in furnished and centrally
heated one or two bedroom apartments. All apartments have telephones
and they are serviced weekly. Ormond has a high speed network infrastructure
that is connected to the Internet. The type of network is Ethernet,
which uses a particular connection type known as 10BaseT. Sometimes
this is also generally referred to as UTP (unshielded twisted pair).
Standard modems do not work in the College. Visitors who wish to use
the Internet are advised to bring Ethernet (10BaseT) equipped computers,
instead of modems.
Most apartments are in McCaughey Court although there are two studio
flats in Picken Court. The McCaughey Court apartments have a living
room, one or two bedrooms, a self-contained kitchen and a bathroom.
Laundry facilities are close by. The visitors’ apartments are
on the 5th and 6th floors and have views of the city.
You can view the College and its facilities through the virtual
tour.
