Community & Activities

Our culture is energetic, diverse, welcoming and most importantly student-led.

A wide range of backgrounds are represented with students from metropolitan Melbourne, rural and regional Victoria, interstate, and overseas. This creates a rich environment that encourages plurality in ideas and beliefs.

This is enhanced by a full and diverse calendar of activities and events which create countless opportunities for you to make new friends, challenge your thinking and exercise your leadership and teamwork skills.

The Students' Club

Our 2024 General Committee Chair, Alex Meggitt (top middle left) and Committee members: Harper, Ollie, Max, Jen, Luca, Belle, Edie and Ashleigh.

The Ormond College Students’ Club (OCSC) is the centre of student life and activity at the College. It is the driving force behind an Ormondian’s experience and allows residents to devise and lead an impressive range of activities.

The OCSC provides Ormondians with year-round social events and activities, an avenue to participate in intercollegiate competitions, leadership and personal development opportunities and countless other benefits. As an incorporated body, the OCSC has unique agency within the College, affording student leaders an incredible opportunity to genuinely lead an organisation of over 500 members.

While the OCSC is run by the General Committee, who are elected annually, it is shaped by all of its members; anyone can take part in its development and influence the direction it takes for the better. The student community’s ethos instils both a sense of belonging and uniqueness.

The OCSC is the beating heart of College life. It’s what brings students together and will provide you with the opportunity to challenge your ideas, pursue your passions, create lasting memories and be your best.

Sports

Whether it’s as part of a team or part of the supporting crowd, sport brings the College together.

Ormond fields at least one team in every intercollegiate sport as well as non-competitive activities, including athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, golf, hockey, netball, rowing, rugby, soccer, softball, squash, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and cross country.

Students also run an annual Ski Week held at the Ormond Ski Lodge at Mt Hotham.

Drama

Our students host a series of drama performances throughout the year including a sketch club, the annual production and a drama shorts performance.

The annual production is a major event on the College calendar and offers opportunities for students with interest (but not necessarily experience) in acting, lighting, stage management, sound, costumes, make-up, publicity and administrative work.

Music

Music is an integral part of College life. Musical activities include student instrumental ensembles, informal choirs, music soirées, band competitions, jazz and cabaret, and the famous open-mic nights. All students can join the Music Society and shape the musical life of the College. We host regular concerts featuring eminent visiting Australian and overseas musicians during semester.

Our dedicated space, the Lodge – Arts and Music Centre, houses several pianos, including a grand piano and designated music rooms for band practice and ensemble practice.

Art

Our students are an artistic bunch, and the Brack Society runs a number of art projects throughout the year. They also host events which celebrate Ormond’s artistic heritage, organise trips to galleries and put on the annual Ormond Art Show.

Clubs, Committees & Societies

The Students’ Club has a club, committee or society to suit any interest, and all are open for anyone to join. They organise events, facilitate involvement and formalise interest groups within the student community, and are a great way to expand your horizons and meet new people.

Check out just a few of the clubs, committees and societies which our students get involved with:

  • OrMa’am and OrMan: discussion groups to explore the issues facing genders in the 21st century.
  • Indigenous Committee: responsible for the creation of a community and safe space for Indigenous students, whilst providing opportunity for engagement with Indigenous issues by the broader College community.
  • Sustainability Society: promotes sustainable practices and activities, and executes sustainable initiatives within the College.
  • International Students’ Club: creates a community to support all international students who call Ormond home.
  • Academic Society: hosts forums, faculty nights, guest speakers and workshops to extend learning beyond the university degree.
  • Events Society: enhances the Ormond experience through the coordination and organisation of unique, innovative and inclusive events.
  • Pub & Grub Society: fosters the culture of the Junior Common Room as a social space and encourages Ormondians to engage culturally with food and beverages.
  • Active Society: facilitates a wide range of social, non-competitive physical activities, including snow sports, climbing, social sports and other outdoor activites.
  • Leisure Society: encourages Ormondians to discover new interest such as film, board games or billiards.

Publications

The College produces a range of publications, including a number of student-run initiatives. These include the quarterly Students’ Club magazine, ‘The Ormondian’, and the annual ‘Ormond Papers,’ which showcases the best of our academic and creative work. Student participation in writing, photography, editing and production of these publications is vital.

Orientation Week

Orientation Week is your introduction to the Ormond community — a week of terrific welcome activities that you’ll never forget.

At the end, you’ll feel like a real part of the Ormond community, have already made friends, and know your way around Ormond, the University, and Melbourne!

While O-Week can be intense, there’s plenty of time-out scheduled in with the fun. There will be lots of time to hang out and get to know your fellow Ormondians.

We host O-Week’s for incoming students twice a year – semester 1 and 2. Additional information about O-Week can be found via our Moving into Residence FAQs.

A warm welcome into our community
