Ormond Academic Centre honoured with design award

Ormond College’s Academic Centre, completed in June this year, has won a prestigious design award from the Victorian chapter of the Council of Educational Facilities Planners International (CEFPI). CEFPI is the peak body for the design of educational buildings.

The award was made in the category for renovations over $1m. The redesign process was executed by architects McGlashan Everist in conjunction with learning environment expert Associate Professor Peter Jamieson and the Master of Ormond, Associate Professor Rufus Black.

The Academic Centre is an adaptive re-use of the heritage-listed MacFarland building, completed in 1968 and originally designed by architects Romberg & Boyd. The space has been reconfigured to provide an academic hub for the College, including study spaces, tutorial rooms, ubiquitous and integrated technology access, relaxation and function spaces and an extensive library. The award commends the “beautiful” Academic Centre for its “cohesive, contemporary integration of library, technology, pedagogy and materiality.”

Student response to the facility has been overwhelmingly positive and has greatly increased students’ use of the space and interaction with the available resources.
