Academic Centre scoops three 2012 Victorian Architecture Awards

Ormond College’s Academic Centre, completed in June 2011, won three categories at last night’s Victorian Architecture Awards. The awards were made in the categories of Heritage, Interior Architecture and Public Architecture (Alterations and Additions).

The award for Public Architecture (Alterations and Additions) was split three ways. The redesign process was executed by architects McGlashan Everist in conjunction with learning environment expert Associate Professor Peter Jamieson and the Master of Ormond, Associate Professor Rufus Black.

The Academic Centre is an adaptive re-use of the heritage-listed MacFarland building, completed in 1968 and originally designed by architects Romberg & Boyd. The space has been reconfigured to provide an academic hub for the College, including study spaces, tutorial rooms, ubiquitous and integrated technology access, relaxation and function spaces and an extensive library.

Student response to the facility has been overwhelmingly positive and has greatly increased students’ use of the space and interaction with the available resources.
